Overview

The CG BioCore ABR™ (Anaerobic Baffled Reactor) is a passive, gravity-driven treatment technology for applications where simplicity, low cost, and freedom from electrical power are essential. The reactor consists of a series of vertical baffles inside a reinforced concrete chamber that force wastewater to flow alternately upward and downward through separate sludge beds — effectively creating multiple UASB reactors in series within a single structure. Each compartment develops a distinct microbial community specialised for a particular stage of anaerobic decomposition. With no electrical requirements, no moving parts, minimal maintenance, and RCC construction using locally available materials, the ABR delivers BOD/COD reduction and pathogen removal at the lowest lifecycle cost of any biological treatment system.

Working Principle

Wastewater enters the first compartment and flows downward, then upward through the settled sludge bed, over the baffle, and down into the next compartment — repeating across 4–8 compartments. Each upflow-through-sludge passage allows anaerobic microorganisms to digest organic matter. Progressive microbial ecology across compartments provides stable, efficient treatment. Biogas escapes through vent pipes at the top of each compartment. Digested sludge accumulates slowly in the compartment floors and requires removal (desludging) only every 2–5 years using a vacuum tanker.

Key Technical Features

  • Zero electricity — fully gravity-driven
  • No moving parts — minimal maintenance
  • BOD removal: 70–85%
  • 4–8 baffled compartments in series
  • RCC construction — 25+ year design life
  • Tolerates shock loads and flow variations
  • Desludging required only every 2–5 years
  • Functions as primary and secondary treatment in one unit
  • Suitable pre-treatment before constructed wetlands
  • Very low sludge production

Applications

  • Rural and peri-urban municipal sewage
  • Housing society sewage pre-treatment
  • Schools and institutional facilities
  • Small food processing without reliable power
  • Off-grid and remote site treatment
  • Pre-treatment before constructed wetlands (ABR+HSSF)
  • Low-cost community sanitation

Advantages

  • No electricity — works during Pakistan power outages
  • No moving parts — no mechanical breakdowns
  • Extremely low O&M cost
  • All construction materials locally available
  • Long life — no membrane or media to replace
  • Combine with constructed wetlands for complete treatment at minimal cost
  • Odour-free operation if properly covered
  • Gravity operation — no pumping required in most configurations

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ABR meet NEQS standards alone? +
No — ABR typically reduces BOD to 80–200 mg/L. For NEQS-compliant discharge, ABR is followed by constructed wetlands (HSSF) or a polishing pond. The ABR+HSSF combination is a proven low-cost treatment train for Pakistan.
How does ABR compare to a septic tank? +
ABR significantly outperforms septic tanks. A conventional septic tank achieves 30–50% BOD removal. ABR achieves 70–85% BOD removal, better pathogen removal, and requires less frequent desludging. The baffled design prevents short-circuiting common in single-chamber septic tanks.
